Record crop apple club variety opal®
At 8,000 tonnes, the largest harvest of the gold-yellow coloured apple variety opal® is harvested in Europe. The increase is due to the harvest of fruit from young orchards in Spain and Italy, as well as the conversion of organic orchards to conventional production. The scab-resistant variety ‘UEB 32642’ with its somewhat rustic appearance is developing its unique selling proposition USP at the point of sale due to its colour and taste. Premium customers will pay more for a well-coloured golden apple, but according to Oswald Rossi from VZ Laimburg in South Tyrol, this is a challenge with ‘Golden Delicious’. The traditional variety tends to lose its texture and storage potential. The sweet and mild opal® flavour with a high proportion of dry matter and vitamin C also has market potential in the processing industry, e.g. as branded juice or as sliced apples for children, as the apples do not turn brown after slicing. The variety is managed in Europe by the editor and brand owner fruit.select and worldwide by DMW Management.
